Summer weather is finally here! It's time to dig out those shorts and skirts from the back of your closet and put away your TNA parka. So you've probably already thought out your summer wardrobe--but have you figured out your summer beauty essentials?
Tinted moisturizer with SPF
Personally, I have never left the house without sunscreen since I was 16. I'm glad I did! Wearing sunscreen religiously prevents shields your skin from sun damage (p.s. once you see freckles start appearing on your skin where you've never had them before, that's sun damage!). I love a tinted moisturizer for the summer because not only do you combine SPF with your moisturizer, you also get coverage from it! Wearing heavier makeup in the summer poses the risk of looking 'cakey' in the heat, and it may even melt! You want lightweight, breathable coverage. Apply it with your fingertips for sheer coverage. For more protection, opt to use layer your tinted moisturizer over your regular moisturizer with SPF.
Try: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, $41 CAD
It can be in the form of spray, lotion, or milk, just make sure you're protecting the rest of your body. Don't forget your ears, hands and feet! Make sure your sunscreen is SPF 15 or higher, though I never go lower than SPF 30. Don't worry, your skin will still get tan from the sun (if you're into tanning)--the SPF content protects from UV Rays, not skin darkening.
Try: Ombrelle Sunscreen SPF 30, $13 - $22 USD
Lip balm with SPF
Your lips can burn too! Protect it with a lip balm containing SPF. Make sure you apply it often because it tends to wear off faster.
Try: Blistex Ultra Protection Lip Balm with SPF 30, $3 - $4 CAD
We don't want raccoon eyes now, do we? Prevent that beauty no-no by reaching for a waterproof mascara. I love drugstore brands for this--they're really affordable and they usually rival high-end brands. At the end of the day, use an eye makeup remover formulated for waterproof mascara.
Try: Almay One Coat Waterproof Mascara, $8 USD
If you can't leave the house with eyeliner, make sure it's waterproof as well. It won't budge all day, and come in a wide array of colours at your local drugstore. A brown shade works well for the summer for that natural look.
Try: Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner, $20 USD
I love a cream blush for the summer. Not only does it maintain a dewy look (which it totally on-trend!) as opposed to the muting effects of a powder blush, but it's also more forgiving. Like your tinted moisturizer, apply it with your fingers or a sponge for easier blending.
Try: Pot Rouge For Lips And Cheeks, $24 USD
If you don't like the dewy look and prefer a matte finish, use a light, translucent powder. Don't use a compact powder (the ones that come with a mirror) because it will produce in a 'cakey' result. Apply with a fluffy brush.
Try: Setting FX Translucent Setting Powder, $32 USD
Oil absorbing sheets
Instead of piling on the powder (and save precious purse space) later on in the day, go for oil absorbing sheets. Make sure they are the non-powdered kind to avoid another layer of makeup on your face.
Try: Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets, $5.69 USD
Spray protectant for your hair
Let's not forget where the sun hits us first, on our heads! Save your scalp and hair by using a spray suitable for your tresses.
Try: Shiseido Refreshing Sun Protection Spray SPF 16 PA+, $27 USD
